Incoming Wind Storm 🌬️

@thousandoaksreport on Instagram

Brace yourselves—Ventura County is in for a major Santa Ana wind event, with gusts expected to hit 80+ mph Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning, and for areas like Moorpark, Simi Valley, and the Santa Monica Mountains, an even more severe “particularly dangerous situation” alert.

What does this mean? Hold on to your hats people! With bone-dry humidity levels and howling winds, any spark could turn into a fast-moving wildfire. Officials are urging residents in fire-prone areas to stay prepared—have an emergency plan, pack a go-bag, and keep an eye on alerts.

This storm could rival or exceed conditions from recent fires, so take it seriously! Stay safe, Moorpark, and let’s hope the only thing blowing away this week is our collective post-holiday sluggishness.

Close Call at Moorpark’s AeroVironment 🔥

JUAN CARLO/THE STAR

Monday morning got a little too electrifying at AeroVironment in Moorpark when a 25-pound battery pack caught fire, filling the building with smoke and prompting an evacuation. Ventura County firefighters swooped in around 10:30 a.m., quickly isolating the smoldering battery until hazardous materials crews arrived to safely extinguish it.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported—just one case of minor smoke inhalation (and hopefully a newfound appreciation for fresh air). The building itself avoided damage, but hazmat teams stayed behind to decontaminate the site and ensure workers could safely return.

The fire department is still investigating, but one thing’s for sure—big thanks to our local firefighters for keeping Moorpark safe once again!

San Fernando Coffee Co - Coming Soon! ☕

Something’s percolating in Moorpark, and caffeine lovers should take note—San Fernando Coffee Company appears to be setting up shop in town! While details are scarce (aside from a fresh new sign at the location), here’s what we do know:

With existing locations in San Fernando and Canyon Country, this coffeehouse is known for crafting delicious brews and brunch bites while fostering a welcoming, community-first atmosphere. They proudly source organic, fair-trade beans from Latin America, so you can sip with a clear conscience.

The new spot appears to be nestled between Lemmo’s Grill and Panda Fresh in the Vons parking lot on Tierra Rejada. I’ll keep you posted as more details come up!

Event of the Week! 👩

Looking to start the new year by giving back? The Moorpark Women’s Club is kicking off 2025 with its next meeting on Friday, Jan. 10, at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley. This volunteer-driven philanthropic organization is dedicated to serving Moorpark and beyond, and they’re always welcoming new faces!

This month’s guest speaker is Jacquelyn Gargano from the Ronald McDonald Family Room, an organization that provides comfort and support to families with hospitalized children. If you’re passionate about community service and want to connect with like-minded women, this is your chance!

MC Basketball Update 🏀

The Moorpark Raiders Men’s Basketball team put up a fight in Glendora, dropping 100 points against Citrus College in their final non-conference game. Despite a stellar 25-point performance from Reese Widerberg, plus 22 from Jordan Torres and 19 from Isaiah Sherrard (with 9 rebounds!), the Owls' red-hot shooting was just too much to overcome.

Now sitting at 10-6, the Raiders are shifting their focus to defending their WSC North title. They’ll hit the road to face Santa Barbara on Jan. 8 at 7 PM, before returning home for a must-watch matchup against Ventura on Jan. 11 at 3 PM.

Expect fireworks—conference play is here, and the Raiders are ready to battle!
