Fire off Grimes - CONTAINED
Early Wednesday morning, Ventura County Fire crews tackled a brush fire near Grimes Canyon Road and Shekell Road. Sparked just before 12:30 AM, the blaze burned nearly an acre, fueled by dry conditions and a moderate spread. Positioned under power lines, the fire posed a significant risk, but thanks to the quick response of fire crews, it was fully extinguished by 1:30 AM.
One power line sustained damage, and SoCal Edison, CHP Moorpark, and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office were on hand to assist.
Heads up for northbound commuters: Grimes Canyon Road into Fillmore was briefly closed for mop-up operations.
The cause of the fire remains a mystery for now, but it’s another reminder to stay fire-aware during these dry months. Huge thanks to our firefighters for their swift action! 👏🔥
Hughes Fire Update - 36% Containment
VC Star
While the Hughes Fire near Castaic Lake doesn’t directly threaten Moorpark, its smoky aftermath is noticeably affecting our air quality. The fire, which has grown to over 10,000 acres, is currently 36% contained, with thousands of firefighters working tirelessly to prevent it from spreading into Ventura County.
Evacuation orders near Piru have been downgraded to warnings, and while flames have not crossed the county line, authorities remain on high alert due to shifting winds. Local crews have been stationed in Fillmore overnight to monitor and respond if needed.
The smoky conditions serve as a reminder to stay indoors as much as possible and limit outdoor activities, especially for those sensitive to poor air quality.

S/O Raiders Basketball!
This week’s Athlete Spotlight shines on Moorpark College basketball’s Cooper Lucas! The freshman guard from Newbury Park High School delivered a standout performance against Allan Hancock, dropping 30 points—the second time a Raider has hit this mark all season.
Lucas wasn’t just on fire offensively; he also snagged four steals, playing a pivotal role in the team’s clutch victory. This performance marked a major comeback for Lucas, who hadn’t hit double-digit points since mid-December.
Way to bounce back, Cooper! Keep an eye on this rising star as the Raiders continue their season.
